Abstract
This article illustrates the uniqueness of Canada’s first workers’ funds—the Fonds de solidarité—in terms of its historical background and the precedents that laid the ground for its creation. The differences and similarities with comparable initiatives in other countries will be highlighted. The article concludes by evaluating the controversial union strategy of acquiring and investing in firms within the capitalist system in order to achieve greater economic democracy.
