Development Through Information Networks in the Asia-Pacific Region

Abstract

There is, at present, in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, an increasing need for access to scientific and technical information to attain national development goals. Problems arising in the provision of information are outlined. The establishment of cooperative activities for resource-sharing has become essential for optimal use of existing resources and for information exchange. The concept of networking is briefly described. Unesco established a Regional Network for the Exchange of Information and Experience in Science and Technology in Asia and the Pacific (ASTINFO) under its second Medium-Term Plan. The main objectives and programme areas of ASTINFO are outlined. The ASTINFO infrastructure within a Member County and its institutional framework are described. The activities of ASTINFO include the creation of specialized sub-networks in selected subject areas and strengthening of existing national and regional networks. Certain problem areas in operating ASTINFO programmes and future needs are discussed. The establishment of regional networks for information exchange and bibliographical control has to be given the highest priority if future developmental activities are not to be seriously hampered.
