Information for the Rural Person in Ghana: strategies for dissemination

Abstract

The library is portrayed as a vehicle for educating, informing and enlightening the rural person in Ghana. The role of the Ghana Library Board in this direction is outlined pointing out its shortcomings. The traditional functions and activities of a library, like lending and reference services are inadequate for achieving the expected results in present day information delivery. New methods for transferring relevant information for the development of the physical and human resources in the rural area, especially as extension activities, are proffered. The importance of involving the rural dweller in the successful planning and execution of information delivery methods at the rural level is discussed. Some obstacles which may hinder the effective acquisition and dissemination of information to the rural person are highlighted and suggestions for overcoming them are made.
