Abstract

Reviews the world and domestic petroleum pictures, then some of the more commonly proposed domestic solutions to the energy problem–increasing petroleum production or imports, conservation, and developing fuels from alternative sources. An example is developed in depth for the case of synthetic fuels from coal for transportation, to provide an indication of the magnitude of the problem. Implications for the human factors profession are drawn.
