Abstract
This opinion piece explores the role that occupational therapy has in the treatment of drug misuse in accordance with available literature. It describes the document Models of Care for the Treatment of Drug Misusers (MoC) (National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse 2002, 2006), which sets out the national framework for the commissioning of adult treatment for drug misuse across England. This is followed by a discussion of the role that occupational therapy can play in addressing the interventions outlined in the four tiers. In the MoC document, some services or interventions, such as assessment, work and education, socialising and self-care, are mentioned, in which, according to the literature, occupational therapists could be involved. These interventions are explored citing relevant research.
