Abstract
Use of a flexible fiber-optic naso-laryngoscope has permitted visualization and identification of laryngeal structures and various abnormalities in patients difficult to examine by mirror laryngoscopy. It has already made possible a fuller appreciation of laryngeal appearances related to both normal and to disturbed physiology. In addition, it has been possible to observe the larynges of three patients during the use of such therapeutic procedures as use of loft register, yawn, sigh, and voice focus; to hear the therapist's requests of the patients; and to observe the patient's immediate laryngeal response as well as listen to his audible response. Such information now makes possible a more definitive treatment plan. As treatment is carried out, documentation of progress and reevaluation is greatly enhanced. The teaching value of this in a field which has had to rely primarily on empirical concepts in the past is noteworthy. Since multiple observers are permitted with the combined laryngoscope video-tape equipment, common bases of image simultaneous with sound, may assist in the development of a workable nomenclature for the many scientific disciplines engaged in research in voice and its major role in the broad field of human communications.
