Abstract
Empirical genetic research strongly indicates that particular proteins comprise physical substrates of the qualities which, in turn, constitute consciousness. From the perspective of a theorist, the proteins are simply molecules, but from the perspective of a conscious individual, the characteristics of the proteins constitute the basic elements of qualities that, after processing by the cognitive structures of the brain, reach the level of consciousness. As consciousness, the qualities are normally taken for granted. The development of consciousness is described as beginning with noumenal environmental objects which convey energies that give rise to sensory inputs and qualities. Qualities, in turn, are organized into phenomenal objects that are then referred to the environment as the objects of perception and consciousness. Thus, consciousness is considered to be physical and multiple, a collection of qualities, rather than a single, ill-defined, all-encompassing entity.
