Abstract
An analysis is presented of the assumptions involved in both the derivation and practical application of the Dubinin–Serpinski (DS) equation. It is concluded that, although the model is very simple, it manages to take into account many of the principal factors involved in the formation of an adsorbed water phase on carbon surfaces. Furthermore, although only a relatively small amount of work has been published so far on the application of the DS equation, those results which are available suggest that the equation holds great promise for the characterisation of both the functionality and microstructure of carbon adsorbents. It is pointed out, however, that there is an urgent need for more independent studies and a number of suggestions for future work are given.
