Residence and Descent Is Hyperdiffusional?

Abstract

Zucker's (1976) test for Galton's problem leads him to claim that the association between patrilocality and patrilineality is "hyperdiffusional.' We critically examine his test, and present detailed evidence of a variety of tests vripporting the lawful relation between residence and descent. We offer also some deductive arguments on the effect and the measurement of diffusion, together with some hypothetical examples showing how sev eral of the proposed solutions go astray.
