Abstract

The purposes of the study were to develop and evaluate a computer-aided pattern design tutorial and to survey student attitudes toward computer technology and CAD systems. A tutorial developed by the researchers was based on a software package currently being used by industry. Student attitudes toward computer technology and CAD systems were examined with a Likert-type attitude scale. Students received instruction in traditional (manual) flat pattern design methods, completed dart manipulation exercises (pretest), and then completed the same exercises using the CAD system (posttest). The attitude scale was administered before and after using the CAD system. The tutorial was as effective an instructional tool as traditional methods of teaching pattern design. There were no significant differences in student attitudes before and after completing the tutorial. Many students were computer-literate prior to the study and had already developed positive attitudes toward technology and CAD systems. Future plans include refinement and expansion of the tutorial.
