Abstract
A contact is formed from two elastically similar cylinders of the same diameter and having ends cut at the same angle, not necessarily perpendicular to their axes, pressed end to end. The interface experiences Coulomb friction and the assembly is subject to transverse shear and remote torsion. This constitutes a contact with a mutually defined extent. The condition for and location of the point of first slip are found. It is shown that torsion (anti-plane loading) encourages edge slip and transverse (in-plane) shear encourages slip from an interior point. The necessary condition for adhesion at the edge under the most general condition is derived.
