Abstract
Early political-ideological constraints caused Soviet human factors engineering to have a difficult gestation; however, in recent years it has achieved a high degree of proficiency. This paper discusses the early development of human factors engineering in the USSR, describes the direction which human factors has taken, outlines analytic and engineering approaches employed, and delineates differences in professional philosophies between Western and Soviet practitioners.
