Abstract
Information transmission from machine to man is a very critical factor in emergency situations. In such cases, it is often recommended that auditory signals be employed. However, if more than one type of emergency condition is likely to occur, it becomes necessary to properly code them for ease of perception and action. This paper will describe a study conducted to investigate the human ability to identify auditory stimulus. Three frequency levels (500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz) and three intensity levels (50 db, 60db, and 70 db) were used. The results indicate that the subjects were more accurate when the source was in front rather than in the rear. Also left side location was found better than right side location. The data was further analyzed for the amount of information transmitted for the tested pure tones.
