Abstract
The present study was a comparative analysis of spiritual direction and psychotherapy. Sixty-eight spiritual directors and fifty psychotherapists responded to questionnaires surveying their goals, techniques, evaluation methods, and concerns discussed by their clientele. Practitioner characteristics were also assessed. The results suggest significant overlap between the two disciplines. Spiritual directors were more likely than psychotherapists to incorporate methods and topics from the other discipline into their practice. Implications for both fields regarding training and suggestions for future research are discussed.
