Abstract
As part of a study of various types of flame retardants, an effort was made to determine the phosphorus, chlorine, and bromine concentrations which give optimum flame retardancy in rigid foams. The effects of individual compounds containing these elements, as well as the effect of combining phosphorus and chloride, and phophorus and bromine compounds have been examined. Several fomulating principles have been derived. In addition, the acting mechanisms and the dependence of the effect on the compostion and structure of the various types of flame retardants are considered. Interestingly, elementary red phosphorus is an excellent flame retardant.
