Abstract

Constraint on capital funds available to the UGC for library buildings which has led to the adoption of a policy of "self renewal" based upon withdrawal of little-used stock is described. This departure from the traditional acquisition policies in university libraries is examined and the possible consequences discussed. The policy is challenged on the grounds that it is based upon false economies and inadequate research.
