In a research project by the SI (Sozialwissenschaftliches Institut), which started in 2018, civil society engagement in the context of the refugee crisis was studied with regard to the motives, world views, attitudes, goals and self-conceptions of the people involved. The project’s findings, in conjunction with the results of the ‘Refugee Surveys’ conducted annually since 2015, were presented at a conference and were commented on from the perspectives of engagement, religion, movement and democracy research. The contributions to the conference that are published here provide impetus for answering the question of how this controversy can be taken up in political, public and ecclesiastical discussions.
