Abstract

The standard formula for bin size is based, ultimately, on constant velocity assumptions. We extend the calculation of bin size and related parameters to media characterized by a linear v(z) velocity function. We present design equations accurate for all dips, including those beyond 90°, and these expressions reduce to known forms in the constant velocity limit. The variable velocity bin size is larger than would be calculated by standard methods, whereas migration distance and travel times are smaller. Since bin size has a first‐order effect on acquisition and processing cost, this allows design of cost‐efficient 3-D seismic surveys.
