Abstract
A large anomaly in the total‐magnetic intensity was recorded by a towed proton‐precession magnetometer at the mouth of the River Tagus, Portugal. By comparing the observed anomaly with that of a dipole field, values for the intensity of magnetisation and the depth to the center of the disturbing body have been calculated. The ship’s magnetic compass suffered deflections with a range of 8 degrees in the region of the main anomaly. Calculations of the deflections produced by the theoretical dipole were also in this range.
