Abstract

We find diffeomorphisms of low entropy in each isotopy class on S 3 × S 3 {S^3} \times {S^3} . These arise as word maps, a nonabelian analogue of toral automorphisms. Hyperbolic examples of equal entropy are also found. The group π 0 Diff ( S 3 × S 3 ) {\pi _0}\;\operatorname {Diff}\,({S^3} \times {S^3}) is computed.
