Abstract
The Automobile and suburbanization: the Montréal case 1901-2001. The predominance of the automobile as a mode of transportation in the Montreal metropolitan area is the result of a long evolution The constant progression in the number of cars since the beginning of the century is analysed in relation to population growth and suburbanization which has tended to favour the automobile to the detriment of public transit. Still in the 80s the progression of the automobile continues and public transit stagnates. This is due partly to the continuance of suburbanization and to the aging of population In the year 2001 and after, these long term trends may be expected to continue.
