1. The proposed case study leads to a wild range of elements to consider and constraints to define. Even if this study has been performed at this level of details, it is difficult to show the results completely in a paper. For this reason, the IXV experiment will be used as example. In Table 2, are reported the main inputs used for the next analysis. These technologies have been derived from the analysis of the critical technologies for IXV17 18and are realted to a specific technology areas (i.e. Termal Protection System, TPS). On the contrary, the costs analysis is estimated from statistical analysis: while the Cost-at-Completion (CaC) have bene estimated from literature, every Table2. IXV example data. Technologies selected for the IXV example with indication of the relative starting and final TRL (2006-2015). The table summarizes the data obtained through the database and a statistical analysis concerning the costsrelated to each TRL transit and the CaCestimation.

3. 8 - 0.17 4.16 0.08 4.4 TRL transits costs have been derived from a statistical analysis looking at space systems and international roadmaps data. For additional data or for the reasoning that has led us to the definition of this short list, please refer to16. In addition, it is important to note that not all the technologies listed have been actually applied in IXV, but they were studied in the same period as alternatives to the final configuration. The TRL to reach in the roadmap definition is 8, as it is the TRL reached after IXV flight in the selected technologies. Finally, the final budget is there constrained to be 25 Mio €, as it is at a first average the budget really allocated to the final configuration study and development, while willnotbe considered inthisbudgeteventual intermediate demonstrative missionsfor simplicity.
