Abstract
The zonal Monte Carlo method is generalized for applications to radiative heat transfer in multidimensional absorbing and isotropic scattering media with different homogenous optical properties in discrete regions. As an example of application, the scattering of a collimated energy beam through an absorbing and isotropic scattering medium to disjoint receiving surfaces is analyzed. The multidimensional distribution of the scattered energy for different extinction coefficients, scattering albedos, and geometrical configurations is generated. Numerical data are used to assess the effectiveness of using scattering materials for thermal protection. Some insights on the design of laser scattering experiments to determine the optical properties of scattering materials by numerical inversion are identified.
