Alas, color maps are not all equal, and depending on the choices made one can accelerate or impair scientific inquiry. Since they are just means-to-an-end, their impact on the underlying data should be as minimal as possible. In a myriad of choices, one color map has been shown to be a bad choice for virtually any type of visualization: the well-known and widely-used rainbow color map.47-49
