Generation of the suspension was achieved through the elutriation of particles upward through a fluidized bed similar to that previously described by Veyssiere et al. (1979). The suspension generator was set at the bottom of the detonation tube so that the tube was filled by sweeping it with the mixture (Veyssiere et al. 1979).
4. Indirect calibration of the particle concentration produced by the suspension generator allowed us to know with a good accuracy the actual particle concentration (up to 7000 g/m3) at the lower part of the tube (Peraldi 1985). However, concentration controls at the upper part of the tube by means of an optical device (Veyssiere et al. 1979) revealed that important gradients of dust concentration might exist along the tube.
