Runway texture and grid pattern effects on rate-of-descent perception

Edging moretowards the quantitative, the flight test results in Ref. 16 suggested that microtexture in the spatialfrequency range of 1-10 cycles/deg may be important for hover and low-speed maneuvers in a helicopter. That study compared a pilot's ability to maneuveroveracrackeddrylakebed with and without goggles that effectively removed the cracks from view. The cracks, atthe nearest visual range of 20 ft, had a spatial frequency in the middle of the 1-10 cycles/deg range. The best texture found here is in that range.

4. The results showed that varying the textures had a marginal statistical difference in allowing a subject to better determine sink rate. A texture level of 0.43 cycles/foot allowed a difference in sink rates of 0.89 ft/sec to be perceived. Thislevel of texture seemed to befavored basedupon this experiment and a previous experiment. The level also falls within the range of 1-10 cycles/deg suggested by a previous in-flight study.
