Abstract
Materials at Low Temperatures summarizes the results of a decades-long study on the low-temperature behavior of alloys and its impact on property testing, materials selection, and design. It provides an extensive amount of test data along with associated derivations, insights, and analysis. It describes the effects of cryogenic temperatures on elastic, mechanical, magnetic, electrical, thermodynamic, and thermal properties as well as fracture mechanics and martensitic phase transformations in austenitic stainless steels, iron-nickel alloys, and alkali metals. It also covers the practical considerations involved in the selection of structural alloys, composites, and superconductors and discusses the most widely used methods for measuring temperature, strain, and magnetic fields in cryogenic environments.
