Abstract
Phase Diagrams: Understanding the Basics discusses the transformations metals undergo during heating and cooling and the tools one can use to predict and control the associated changes. It reviews the basic concepts of metallurgy, including solid solutions, phase transformations, and the influence of Gibbs free energy on achievable transitions and states. It explains how to construct and interpret equilibrium phase diagrams for a wide range of binary and ternary alloy systems as well as gas-metal reactions. It also describes the construction and use of time-temperature-transformation diagrams, explaining how they represent important nonequilibrium transformations such as those on which strengthening and hardening processes are based. The book also provides information on computer modeling, metallic structures, and the principles of solidification, and includes a number of examples showing how phase diagrams have been used to solve real-world problems.
