Abstract
Light Microscopy of Carbon Steels examines the diverse range of microstructures that can be achieved in carbon steels by varying carbon content, heat treatments, and deformation processes. It presents more than 1,200 micrographs, explaining how they were acquired and what they reveal about the constituents, properties, and microstructure of the region in view. Each micrograph is accompanied by data on the composition and condition of the sampled material and the magnification and etching method used to prepare and view the associated test specimen. The images illustrate critical factors in the production of carbon steel parts, including phases and phase transformations, solidification, the effect of alloying elements, annealing and normalizing, graphitization, austenitization, tempering, welding, surface oxidation, decarburization, and scaling. The book also clarifies related nomenclature and includes a glossary of terms. For information on the print version, ISBN 978-0-87170-655-3, follow this link.
