Abstract

The hatcheries of Maharashtra state, India breed mainly the species of catla, rohu and mrigal, and are the main suppliers of fish seed in the region. These hatcheries function as isolated and genetically closed units raising their own broodstock within the hatcheries, which leads to the accumulation of inbreeding at a faster rate. In the present study effective population size and cumulative inbreeding rates were estimated. The cumulative inbreeding rates ranged from 0.71-19.09%, 0.05-5.23% and 0.11- 4.24% for catla, mrigal and rohu, respectively.
