Abstract

Tetraploidy was successfully induced in Clarias anguillaris. Hatchability in tetraploids ranged between 50% and 70%, and above 95% in diploid control. About 80% and 100% of the tetraploid and diploid fry survived in the first seven days, respectively. Tetraploids showed better growth performance (12.61 g) but not significant compared to 11.2 g for the diploid. Metaphase chromosome complement of tetraploid was 108 and diploid was 54. About 20% of cells in tetraploid preparation showed 3n and 2n chromosome complements. About 1% phenotypic abnormalities were recorded after hatching in tetraploid but absent in the control.
