Abstract

The central energy source in the effective training of residents resides in the bond or connection between a resident and a preceptor. It serves as the substrate for learning, mentoring, professional growth, and leadership development. This commentary explores the major dynamics of the preceptor-resident relationship, the major determinants of success, and some of the self-imposed barriers that may be counterproductive to an ideal relationship.
