Abstract

In diabetic rats, the hypoglycemic potential of an aqueous extract of Jussiaea repens (50mg/100gm body weight) was examined. The herbal extract's impact on a number of hematological indicators was also studied. Eighteen albino rats, each contain 6 rats, were placed into three groups: vehicle control, diabetes control, and supplemented group. To develop diabetes, a single i.p injection of STZ (80mg/kg body weight) was given. Hematological markers include hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell (RBC) count, white blood cell (WBC) count, packed cell volume (PCV), lymphocytes, and neutrophils, as well as blood glucose levels and HbA1c were assessed. STZ-induced diabetic rats fed the extract had lower fasting blood glucose levels, which was statistically significant (p<0.05). The HbA1c level in the diabetic control group increased drastically, but the level in the extract-treated supplemented group reduced significantly. Hb, PCV, RBC, and WBC as well as their differentials, were significantly reduced in diabetic control rats, whereas the supplemented group recovered significantly.. These findings imply that the aqueous extract of Jussiaea repens has hypoglycemic action and overcomes the abnormalities in STZ-induced diabetic rats' blood parameters.
