An Ethnobotanical Survey of Bandha Exhibits Reliance on Plants

Abstract

Plants are the green currency for every life form, the present study manifests the fact. The focus of the present study is to reveal the reliance of the people of the Bandha on the plants and documentation of total ethnobotanical floral diversity of the Bandha. As plants of ethnobotanical importance include plants of all kind of utility such as medicinal, firewood, timber, fiber, edible plants, ornaments, etc. thus all the available floral diversity is categorized according to their mode of utilization. The scientific name, local name(s), family, habit, traditional knowledge, plant part(s) used, availability, etc. are enumerated in this paper. The study reveals that the ethnic people of the area are still dependent upon plants for various purposes in era of technology so the plants are termed as green currency and the documentation of such information and conservation of such diversity are emphasized to secure it for coming future generation. Ethnobotanical data were collected by interviewing 104 local inhabitants. A total of 98 species belonging to 85 genera were documented. It is imperative to mention that no plant was harmed or collected and all the plants were identified in their natural habitat.
