Abstract

Let [Formula: see text] be a field with a nontrivial involution [Formula: see text]. An element [Formula: see text] is called [Formula: see text]-real if it is conjugate to [Formula: see text]. We prove that for [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] is [Formula: see text]-real if and only if it has a representation in some unitary group of degree [Formula: see text] over [Formula: see text].
