Abstract
Landau's approach to the theory of nearly degenerate Fermi liquids allows to reduce an A fermion problem to that of just a few particle-hole excitations, thus making the treatment of many of these systems only possible. In contrast, the cluster model suggests to separate the A particles into two groups and study their relative motion, which incorporates a later corresponding binary split of the system in the very ansatz for the wave function. However, the proper antisymmetrization of the wave function makes it in practice impossible to apply this concept to any larger system. We show how the use of the nuclear correlation diagram allows to combine the idea of preformed clusters with the technical advantages of the Fermi fluid concept.
