Abstract
We propose that instantons and axionic domain boundaries stabilize the dilaton. An estimate of the resulting dilaton potential yields a relation between the axion mass and the dilaton mass. A decay constant of the dilaton of the order of the Planck scale then implies mϕ m P ~ mafa, and the dilaton should be strongly aligned at the onset of oscillations, in order not to overclose the universe.
