Topological Aspects of Quasiparticles in Solid

Abstract

Particle-quasiparticle analogy is studied here from a geometrical formulation. Since a crystal can, in general be considered to correspond to an anisotropic feature of space-time in vacuum, the quasiparticle in solid can be treated as particles in an anisotropic space. It is pointed out that the low energy excitation can be visualized through the change in chirality of fermions in such a space. The topological aspects are studied through a gauge theoretical formulation of lattice fermions. It is also argued that the mass generation of quasiparticles has topological origin.
