Abstract
It is demonstrated that the incompleteness of the conventional on-mass-shell renormalization comes from its exclusive application in the S-matrix theory. Therefore, in order to achieve the renormalization of the U-matrix, a new general renormalization concept, being valid in both non-relativistic and relativistic QED, is applied. Moreover, by using the new method, a renormalized general expression for the non-Lorentzian radiative line shape is derived.
