Abstract
This paper considers the three parameter Burr XII distribution and its likelihood function. We first review a link between this distribution and the two parameter Weibull distribution, in which the latter emerges as a limiting case of the former. Examples of the likelihood function for the three parameter Burr XII distribution are then used to suggest a reparameterization of this distribution. Analysis of the derivatives of the reparameterized likelihood then leads to a test statistic, indicating whether the Burr XII distribution provides an improved fit over its limiting counterpart. We conclude with some computational considerations, and a brief discussion of the practical implications of our work.
