Abstract
This paper describes recent developments in theoretical and experimental studies on the behavior of vibrating particle beds. A parametric study based on a mathematical model, involving isothermal compression of the air within the bed, revealed the effects of vibratory intensity, frequency, bed height and particle size on the behavior of the bed. Experiments indicated that i) the air pressure attained its maximum, over a cycle, at 25 mm from the top of the bed surface and ii) when a tube was immersed in the vibrating bed and held stationary, the surface level of the bed within the tube rose or fell and stabilized at a level different from that of the bed outside the tube.
