Abstract
After motivating the reasons for performing these calculations, we discuss the various methods of calculation that are used, describe our results for freestanding and epitaxial monolayers of Mo, Pd and Rh and compare with the results of other workers on these and related systems. All calculations agree that a monolayer of Rh on Ag(001) or Au(001) should be ferromagnetic; we conclude by speculating on why experiments disagree.
