Abstract

Purpose: Swan neck deformity is characterized by hyperextension of the proximal interphalangeal joint and flexion of the distal interphalangeal joint. Orthoses, which are used in addition to conservative methods in the treatment process, are produced in various ways. Current three-dimensional (3D) printer technologies are also used in orthotic production. The aim of this study was to produce ring orthoses by using a 3D printer and to evaluate the satisfaction of the users. Material and Methods: The study was structured in two stages: 1) the production of customized orthoses, 2) the evaluation of user satisfaction. Computer-aided design was used in the design phase of the orthosis. The fused deposition modeling method was used in the 3D printing process. Polylactic acid was preferred as the thermoplastic material. The study was carried out with a total of 10 volunteer participants, 7 males and 3 females (the mean age of the participants was 55.2  5.31). User satisfaction was evaluated with the Quebec assistive technology user satisfaction assessment questionnaire (QUEST 2.0). Results: Custom-made ring orthosis was successfully produced with 3D printer technology. The average scores of 8 questions in Q-YTKMD were ranged from 4.00 to 5.00 points out of a maximum of 5.00 points. Conclusion: The current study suggested that it is possible to produce custom orthoses with a high user satisfaction rate in swan neck deformity by using 3D printers, which are increasingly used in the health sector nowadays.
