D. Lewandowska's book is a very interesting monograph on the perception of intersexuality in antiquity. The terms androgynus and hermaphrodite are most often identified with each other as an intersex person. This explanation appears first in the LSJ. The reviewed book shows that the term androgine was viewed as an effeminate male.
