Orthodontic space closure is a method for moving teeth into gaps of missing teeth by using orthodontic appliances. This article is focused on cases where premolars, canines and laterals are moved anteriorly to replace the missing front teeth. The treatment requires high standards for both functional and aesthetic aspects, and extensive planning is crucial for a successful outcome. Space closure is a treatment that is suitable for young individuals with missing anterior teeth due to agenesis, dental trauma, retained teeth or other pathology. Many of these patients are entitled to public funding through Helfo with different levels of support based on age and conditions. The literature underscores the functional and aesthetic advantages of orthodontic space closure, which can lead to a reduction in the restorative treatment needs as well as implant treatments in the anterior maxilla. The procedure involves individualized intrusions/extrusions and reshaping of teeth in younger individuals. There is a clear advantage that the restorative treatment is done shortly after the orthodontic appliance has been removed. Orthodontic space closure is the preferred treatment for missing teeth in the anterior maxilla for young patients and those with a gummy smile. This is especially true when autotransplantation of premolars during development is not possible.
