Abstract
AbstractHere, we report the incidental isolation and genome sequencing of anE. coliO157:H7 strain isolated from the faeces of commercial, specific-pathogen free mice (BALB/c). The isolate, subsequently named EC_MP01 was found to carry both Shiga toxin 2a and the Locus of Enterocyte Effacement (LEE) pathogenicity island, major virulence factors associated with severe disease in humans. This report draws attention to the limitations of existing screening systems and highlights how strain carriage influence the outputs from such studies.
