Abstract
When asked, “Do you like mathematics? Why or why not?” at the beginning of each school year, a startling 80 to 85 percent of my middle school students would reply that they did not like mathematics because it was boring and because they did not understand it very well. Their negative attitudes appeared to stem from a lack of understanding based on plain boredom with uninteresting classes.
