Abstract
Facility in problem solving is an acknowledged aim of any mathematics program. But ability to solve problems is also considered to be a goal of science instruction, and a social science program may be built around a “problems approach.” Thus the topic of problem solving is not the exclusive property of mathematics. The purpose of this article is to explore differences other than content between problems in mathematics and problems in other subject matter areas.
