Abstract
Recent research indicates that to promote meaningful learning, mathematical instruction should begin with experience that are real to pupil and then proceed to the symbolic level (e.g., Baroody 1987; Davis 1984; Ginburg 1982). Clearly, manipulative can be an important tool in effort to make mathematics more real to pupil. However, to discourage their uncritical use, perhaps manipulative hould carry the following warning label: The Secretary of Education [or other appropriate authority] has not determined that using manipulatives is either a sufficient or a necessary condition for meaningful learning.
