Abstract
Each day, teachers make many instructional decisions on the spur of the moment. These decisions typically are in response to what children are doing or to what teachers believe children are thinking. Observing children works well as a way of knowing what they are doing, but the most effective way I know to get information about children's thinking is to ask them to explain how they found their answers to problems.
